U.S. Attacks Afghanistan and Sudan
President Clinton ordered cruise missile attacks on targets in Afghanistan and the Sudan. Anywhere from 75 from 100 missiles were launched, at least one of which errantly landed in Pakistan, killing 5 people. The administration was targeting areas linked to Osama Bin Laden, a wealthy Saudi businessman whom the U.S. maintains was behind the embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania on August 7th. While information on what was actually hit inside Afghanistan remains sketchy at this point, Sudanese officials claim a pharmaceutical plant was destroyed in the raid. Secretary of State Madeline Albright said yesterday that the plant contains “the precursors for the possibilities of chemical weapons.”

Workfairness Rally Marks Welfare Reform Anniversary
Tomorrow marks the second anniversary of the so-called welfare reform act. To mark the anniversary a group known as Workfairness has sponsored a demonstration and rally in New York City. Welfare recipients in New York and elsewhere have been forced into workfare programs. The recipients are expected to work in exchange for their benefits. But the workers are not unionized. And in many cases there have been reports of abuse and unfair working conditions. In addition, welfare recipients say they are working as hard as unionized employees, but are not adequately compensated.

Artist/Composer: Democracy Now!
Date: 1998-08-21
Source: DAT tape captured with DATXtract and partially RealAudio stream

Most of this recording is from a 32kHz DAT tape recording in the Democracy Now archive. The recording started late and didn't record the first 1:12 of the show. This 1:12 is taken from the real audio source. Note the beginning of the recording is much lower quality.
